Good News: HER & Conscious Healing

Bearing Burdens Together

Why We Partner Instead of Just Fund

The Goodness Foundation is built on relationship. We could write checks and walk away — but we don’t believe that’s where real change happens. We believe the best generosity is relational generosity: showing up, staying present, and carrying weight alongside the people already doing the hard, faithful work in our community.

That conviction has a face and a name: Melissa Brown.

Joe met Melissa at a conference — one of those moments that could have ended with a handshake and a good conversation, but instead became a partnership. Melissa is a key representative of the people already laboring for good in our community, and she quickly became someone TGF knew we were meant to come alongside.

Melissa leads HER — Homes Empowering Recovery — an organization dedicated to giving men and women a stable, structured place to rebuild their lives after addiction. Recovery doesn’t happen in isolation; it happens in community, in safe walls, in a bed that’s yours and a program that believes in your future. That’s exactly the kind of good work The Goodness Foundation exists to strengthen.

So we didn’t just fund HER’s mission — we partnered in it. TGF provided a men’s home for HER, along with the renovation and effort to prepare it as a sober living residence for men in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area. It’s more than a place to stay. It’s a foundation — literally and figuratively — for the men who are choosing recovery and need a place to stand while they rebuild.

Our partnership with Melissa doesn’t stop there. TGF also walks alongside Conscious Healing, Melissa’s community recovery center, which serves both men and women — because we know recovery isn’t a single step, it’s a continuum. A home without support services isn’t enough. Support services without a stable place to live isn’t enough. But when we can connect people to reputable, trusted resources at every stage of their journey, the whole picture changes. That’s the heart of continuum of care, and it’s the reason partnership matters more than a one-time gift.

This is what relational generosity looks like in practice: not a transaction, but a relationship. Not a single act of giving, but an ongoing commitment to bear burdens together.

It is our honor to come alongside HER, Conscious Healing, and Melissa Brown in the good work she’s building — and to keep showing up for as long as there’s a burden worth sharing.
